There are many touristy “township tours” on offer but I find that most such tours feel like people’s communities and homes are just a zoo to visit. We don’t believe that is the right way to help visitors understand the complexity and hardships and community spirit that most people living in this country experience.
In order to help visitors understand this aspect of South Africa while still respecting the lives and homes of locals, we offer a tour that passes through the townships on our route but where the goal of the experience is seeing the landscape that is the backdrop of ordinary people’s lives, and share a meal and learn about life in these areas and not to gawk at the people who live there or invade their privacy without really relating to them. We find that this significantly changes the tone of the experience.
The “Home-talk” tour we offer starts at Rhodes Memorial with a view over the Cape flats looking out along the route we then follow through the day. This helps provide context and an opportunity to prepare for the experience. We take you along the coastal road skirting the southern boundary of the two largest townships on the Cape Flats with beautiful views of False Bay. You will enter Mitchells Plain to visit Ricky’s home for lunch and then on to Khayelitsha, the largest informal settlement in Cape Town, to climb a small hill – a very easy walk with a stunning view back over the Cape flats toward Table Mountain – a nice finishing touch to the day.
